It genuinely doesn’t matter. Your FPS will be almost the same regardless of what distro or desktop environment you use. It might matter on VERY low end devices like ones with 4gb of RAM, but other than that, just use whatever you’re comfortable with.

The point of a gaming distro isn’t performance but just setting up everything you need like drivers and important apps that could be useful in gaming - like Lutris and mangohud and stuff.

Terraria and deep rock galactic are good starters, but this post sounds insanely paranoid for the wrong reasons. Just because you got infected with malware in the past doesn’t mean you need to lock down your internet access. You’ll gain nothing from it. All you need is an adblocker (+ something that blocks trackers) and not running suspicious files.

Just because you’re connecting to a remote server (like any website ever) doesn’t mean you’re susceptible to attacks. Ditto for almost any modern video game, there are protections in place so nobody can run code or send you harmful files on your machine.

It’s honestly kind of amazing that it lasted so long in the first place

Well… At least the dev is honest about it being just for fun… I’ll give it 2 months before it’s a dead project. There is literally no way someone that has zero gamedev experience can remake a multi-million dollar game.

This thing definitely won’t be gaming, but I’d like to maybe play videos (probably at a low resolution) and mp3 files at least.

Are you sure you’re putting your saves in the right folder? I’ve moved my saves back and forth on many games and they work fine. Binding of Isaac has cloud saves on Steam.

I kinda hate this take flying around constantly. There is such a thing as a gaming distro: one that has sane defaults for gaming, has the important things pre-installed like Feral GameMode, ProtonUp and the Nvidia drivers, etc. Also having an up-to-date package manager for these essentials is vital.

Yeah, technically all distros are very similar, but most people asking for recommendations specifically want something that just works for their task, not everyone can fiddle with packages and DEs to get what they want.

I second Nobara, but IMO get the KDE edition of it if you’re used to Windows. You’ll feel much more at home.

When in doubt check out Protondb, it’s a database that says whether games work on Proton or not and people often put fixes there.

It seems like it should work but you need to right click the game --> properties then add -w 1920 -h 1080 as launch options.

Halls of Torment gets my vote. As usual with the genre it’s pretty grindy so I lost interest, but it’s probably the best vampire survivors-like I’ve tried yet. Works flawlessly on Proton btw.

Nobara Linux. It’s a fedora derivative that’s focused for gaming, with regular updates. It even comes with all the important things like Steam and Feral Gamemode installed. Make sure to download the Nvidia version if you have an Nvidia GPU.
